Collings Castle is a Must See while Staying at Turner Falls Cabins
A visitor on his trip to the Turner Falls once reported, “I was recently on a camping trip to Turner Falls and toured Collings Castle and wanted to find out more about the history and original design.” This Castle, the visitor has talked about is an ancient castle in the Turner Falls that is known by the name of ‘Collings Castle.’ “I was pleased to see it. It seems that there is very little to be found out there (on the web) regarding it, and to have your picture so clearly showing the pre-tourist damage was unbelievable!” the visitor further talked about the castle. His statement clearly depicts that the castle itself was a marvelous place, but its beauty has now been ruined by the frequent tourist visits.
The Collings Castle in the Turner Falls Park was created during the middle of a great Depression. It is a very ancient fortification about which many people have stated to be haunted. This rare Oklahoma castle has an imposing structure and architecture that is hard to miss. Inside there is dark, narrow tunnel like doorways found. The walls are made of big blocks of stones and are covered with graffiti. These gray stone walls line the footpath throughout. The marks and carvings show a that a fan was present once too. The narrow passageways end up in a dense cover of trees.
History of the Castle
The castle came into existence in the 1930’s. It got its affiliations with the estate of Ellsworth Collings later in that decade. Collings was the dean of the education department at the University of Oklahoma and also a very famous author of that time. The total area covered by the castle was a little less than one acre of land. It consisted of a house that had two living rooms and three bedrooms. The house was well decorated with ornaments and rocks of various types such as rust colored rose rocks. Also, there were two other houses called the ‘outhouses’ outside the main building. Geologists have reported discovering a garage in the compound too.
Structure
A tourist in the following words summed up the structure of the castle, “The tower is cool but very narrow; I had to turn sideways just to walk up the stairs to go to the top. I am a slender, tall man so this guy must have been about the size of my 13-year-old. There are stairs and doors to every rooftop. The building on the left on top of the stairs must have been the outhouse bath. On top of the stairs is another building that looks like the others that must have been a horse and buggy stable. To the right of the castle, there is another castle a little smaller. It would be my guess that this was a guest house for a company or another family member.”
The tourists are always very keen to explore this ancient castle. The people who visit this old structure for the love of old buildings falls in love with the beauty of the castle’s structure and architecture. “It was fascinating. It was huge. It was bigger than life then,”are the words of one such visitor.
