Best Time to Visit Turner Falls, Oklahoma: A Season-by-Season Guide

Turner Falls

Table of Contents

Turner Falls is worth the drive any month of the year, but the trip you get depends a lot on when you go. In July you will share the 77-foot waterfall with summer crowds and swim in cool, spring-fed pools. In December you might have the trails almost to yourself, with a fishing rod in hand. This guide walks through each season at Turner Falls Park in Davis, Oklahoma, with current admission prices, hours and practical tips, so you can pick the best time for your visit.

The Short Answer: When Is the Best Time to Visit Turner Falls?

  • Best for swimming: June through August, ideally on a weekday morning.
  • Best for fewer crowds and lower prices: October and early spring (March and April), when winter rates apply.
  • Best for photos of the falls: spring, especially after a few days of rain, when the water is at its fullest.
  • Best for fishing: November through mid-March, during the park’s winter trout season.

Whatever you choose, staying overnight in one of our cabins inside the park lets you be at the water before the day-trip crowds arrive and stay after they leave.

Turner Falls Park Season by Season

The park runs on two pricing seasons: summer, from May 1 to September 30, and winter, from October 1 to April 30. Here is what each part of the year is really like.

Spring (March to May): Full Falls and Green Hills

Spring is when Turner Falls looks its best. Rain fills Honey Creek, the falls run strong, and the Arbuckle Mountains turn green almost overnight. Mild temperatures make it a great time for the park’s hiking trails, the caves and Collings Castle, the stone ruin on the hillside above the creek.

Until April 30 you still pay winter rates, so March and April are some of the best-value weeks of the year. The water is usually too cold for most swimmers until late May. Heavy spring storms can also flood the creek and close swimming areas, so check the park’s latest updates before you drive.

Summer (May to September): Swimming Season

Summer is peak season, and for good reason. The natural pools below the falls, the Blue Hole near the Level 1 parking area, and the shallow cascades along Honey Creek are perfect on a hot Oklahoma day. It is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit, especially on weekends and holidays.

A few tips for a better summer visit:

  • Go on a weekday. Adult admission is lower Monday to Friday, and the pools are far less crowded.
  • Arrive early. Summer check-in opens at 7:00 AM. Morning is cooler, parking is easier, and the water is calm.
  • Know the parking levels. In summer, Level 1 parking costs $25 a day and Level 2 costs $15, both on top of admission. Level 3 is free but a longer walk.
  • Bring life jackets for kids. Children under 13 must wear a Coast Guard certified life jacket to enter the water.
  • Leave the glass and pets at home. Pets, glass bottles and fireworks are not allowed in the park.

Fall (October to November): Quiet Trails and Lower Prices

Fall is the season locals love. Winter rates start on October 1, the crowds thin out quickly once school is back, and cooler days make hiking up to the caves and the castle far more comfortable than in July. The oak and cedar hills of the Arbuckles usually pick up autumn color from late October into November.

Swimming is still possible on warm October afternoons, but expect cold water. Most fall visitors come for the views, a picnic by the creek and a slower pace. It is also a great time for a cabin weekend: evenings on the porch are cool and quiet.

Winter (November to March): Trout Fishing Season

Winter is the park’s best-kept secret. From November to mid-March, Turner Falls Park stocks trout in several of its pools and creek sections. For the 2026–27 season, fishing opens after November 7, 2026.

  • The winter fishing permit costs $25 and includes park admission. It is valid from sunup to sundown on the day you buy it.
  • An Oklahoma fishing license is required in addition to the permit.
  • Only barbless hooks are allowed, with a limit of 3 trout per permit per day.
  • Trout may be kept only in the Bluehole and Butterly pools. Other areas are catch-and-release until mid-March.
  • Children 7 and under do not need a permit, but the adults with them do.

Even if you do not fish, winter is a peaceful time to see the falls, with bare trees opening up views of the canyon walls. Check-in hours are shorter in winter: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Sunday to Thursday, and 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Best Day and Time of Day to Visit

If you can choose, a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning is the sweet spot in any season. You pay weekday prices, you get your pick of parking and picnic spots, and photos of the falls will not be full of other visitors. Summer Saturdays and holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day are the busiest days of the year. On those days, plan to arrive right at opening or stay nearby the night before.

Late afternoon is the other good window. Day-trippers start heading home, the light softens on the falls, and the evening is cooler for a walk along the creek.

Weather and Water Safety Tips

  • Watch the forecast. Honey Creek can rise fast after heavy rain, and the park closes swimming areas when water is high.
  • Swim only in open, designated areas, and never climb or jump from the rocks around the falls.
  • Wear water shoes. The creek bed and limestone ledges are slippery.
  • Bring plenty of water and shade in July and August, when Oklahoma afternoons are very hot.
